South Carolina Synod (ELCA)

We Lutherans in South Carolina are part of a church that shares a living, daring confidence in God’s grace — and there’s room for all here. Your questions, curiosity, passion and complexities are part of who you are, and you are a beloved child of the living God!

In the South Carolina Synod, we seek to respond to God’s love by loving him and serving the people he has created. There are ministries for – and with – all ages, not only in the state of South Carolina, but in many parts of the globe.

The South Carolina Synod is one of 65 synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Lutheran World Relief

Founded by Lutherans in the United States at the end of World War II, grounded in Lutheran theology and building on decades of experience, Lutheran World Relief tackles global poverty by helping people adapt to the challenges that threaten their livelihoods and well-being.

We work with people based on need, regardless of race, religion or nationality and we do not evangelize.

We provide aid in emergencies and help families restore their lives. We partner with communities to build and grow rural economies. We break the cycle of poverty, so families and communities can thrive.

Our goal is to help people build self‐sufficiency and create new community‐owned approaches to problem‐solving that will last long after our projects end.

Greer Soup Kitchen / Daily Bread Ministries

The Greer Soup Kitchen, a part of Daily Bread Ministries, is a non-profit, charitable organization that was founded in 1990 when concerned citizens observed that people in their own town were going hungry. The Soup Kitchen began in a run-down storefront in downtown Greer. One meal was served on our first day. Today over one hundred and fifty meals per day are served in a modern restaurant-style facility.

We rely completely upon donations of food and money from private citizens, churches and businesses. We receive no monies from governmental agencies. With the exception of paying a part-time operations manager/chef and a janitor, every cent we take in goes to feed the hungry, minister to the needy or maintain our facility.

We utilize food donated by churches, restaurants, grocery stores, schools and individuals. Many times this food would have been simply thrown away. Similarly, we have our own garden in which we grow some of the vegetables and herbs we serve.

Our kitchen is staffed with about one hundred twenty five volunteers each week, representing businesses, individuals and over fifty area churches of all denominations.
